Cleveland Grand Prix 2003

2003 was the last time I was a volunteer worker. I still had that Mavica FD, 14x optical zoom camera. 2003 was the first and only time the race held at night. Not many races are held at night, especially grand prix's. Lighting was provided by bucket trucks. The buckets were removed and banks of lights were attached to the booms. Semi-trailer sized generators supplied power to every 2 or 3 trucks. Time trials were held the night before the race. After the time trials, workers spent many hours into the night adjusting the location of the lights.

Plenty of sparks from braking could be seen as cars went through the turns.

A couple of the light towers during the race.

Workers on the infield. They have to stay there till the last car crosses the finish line. The heat and humidity can be brutal during the daytime races.

There was a boat in Lake Erie with paramedics and skin divers just in case a car got too far off the track.

The pace car.

On the taxiway between runways, coming toward turn 8. Obviously not the smoothest part of the course.

Going through turn 8.
