A powerful squall line passed through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio last night. This storm created 90 mph wind in Indiana and several reported touchdowns in Michigan. I got some wind, but the storm was dying by the time it got to me. Edgerton suffered quite a bit wind damage, most being in a 4 block area. I was there last Friday for their city wide garage sale. Being the amateur weather novice that I am, I think it was a microburst.
The town hall was pretty well destroyed. Just last year, there was a group that wanted to restore it. I recall reading about some heated meetings in the newspaper. Don't think they will be arguing about it now.
This is what is left of the old town hall. They say it was around 125 yrs old. A chunk of the roof fell on the fire dept. bldg. next door. A fireman was seriously injured by falling debris. A news report says he has several broken bones and is in a Ft. Wayne hospital.
Several vehicles were pretty well totaled, also.
Looks like trusses aren't a recent construction technique. Not sure about the dimensions, but they looked to be at least 6" X 6".
A downtown building with some of its siding peeled away.
Trustees from the regional jail were helping clean up.
One street north of the fire station had a lot of tree damage and limbs on houses, etc. Several tree trimming companies were busy along with the crews from area utilities and private electric contractors. I saw trucks from a couple area fire departments still there. Everyone was in Edgerton last night.
The east side of this building was peeled away by the wind. It is across the street from the fire dept.
This is the flag pole that stands on the west side of the old town hall. A very tall pine tree is on the ground neat the flag pole. Underneath the tree is "Clem," the town's Civil War Statue. I heard that Clem may be smashed beyond repair.
I save the 'best' for last. This is a container that blew off a train that was passing through town at the time. I don't know if it is empty or full of something. Don't know if it was double stacked or just a single. No cars were derailed. It is about a half mile west of the town hall. I wonder how the engineer and conductor would have explained a missing container????
