For many years, Bryan has been known for it's Christmas lights strung from the courthouse. They were visible for miles. Last year the Chamber of Commerce decided to use 1 watt LED lights instead of the 25 watt incandescent light bulbs. The problem was that the LED lights were not visible until one was just a couple blocks from them. The Chamber decided to go back to the incandescent bulbs this year. The LED's were much more inexpensive to operate, but if ya can't seem 'em, what good are they. The Chamber 'bit the bullet' and sold the LED's back to the manufacturer and bought incandescent bulbs. One of the problems is that the incandescent bulbs are being manufactured any more. Another problem is that they are very fragile.
The new bulbs were strung Tuesday. There are 8 strings going from the courthouse clock tower to buildings across the street. If you think you have trouble untangling your Christmas tree lights, be glad you weren't involved in this. Somebody had to screw the bulbs in each socket. Don't know how many lights there are, but I'm sure there are a couple hundred. Probably a couple people or more with their arms in a sling this week.
I'm glad the old style lights are back. I agree with everyone else, the LED's were just too small for such a large display.
