Cheap Entertainment

Looking for something different to do with yourself this time of year? Go to your local YMCA and watch the little kids play basketball. I'm talking grades 2 & 3. Some of them are pretty good for their age and size and some of them . . . . well . . .

When they have their games, none of them like to give up the ball. It becomes a dribbling marathon. Yesterday, one little guy brought the ball up court, running with it, kicking it and carrying it. He even attempted to dribble a couple times. When he got it up court, he dropped to his knees and held on to the ball with both arms "for the duration." The ref finally gave the ball to someone else on his team.

One time I watched a little guy dribble from one end of the court to the other. He could handle the ball. When he got near the basket, he took two huge jumps, stopped and threw the ball up underhand.

Another time I watched a little guy who could handle the ball well practice dribbling between his legs. The ball was too big unless he was perfect. The clearances were minimal.

Wish there was a way to track the progress of these guy and girls too. Some will keep at it and play on their school teams and some will become discouraged and do other things.
