Once again I've done it to myself. I've been askin around for some deer antlers make some pens. Yesterday I went over to the golf course, cause I know a couple of the guys hunt and I was pretty sure Lynn, our legendary mechanic, would have some layin around in the corner of his barn. He does and he is going to give me some. One of the non-hunters talked me into makin his dad a pen for Christmas with a set that his dad has had hangin on a tree in the back yard. He brought the antlers over after work yesterday.
They are not big. Ever try to drill a hole through something that is oval and curved in two directions???? Don't recommend you tryin it, unless you want to torture yourself. And yes, I feel 'self -tortured.' I only have 4 potentially usable pieces to get two.
My first try was successful, I think. I'm pretty thin on one side at the end. I would feel a lot more comfortable if I had a bit more material.
My second try was not real successful. I drilled out the side. I might be able to make it work if make a different style pen than what I was planning. It just depends if I have enough thickness before the 'drill through.'
I have two pieces left. I think I'm done tryin to drill holes in antler for today. They say gettin holes drilled is the hardest part of makin pens from antlers. I'm tendin to agree with them. Tomorrow, I will try my luck at turning the drilled pieces down to size and shape. Did I mention how bad deer antler smells????
