During my first September living in Bryan, I noticed Ernie and Esther standing on the NE corner of the square. I found out that they were there to advertise a craft show sponsored by one of the local civic organizations. They were hard to miss. Round bales are big.
The following year Ernie and Esther were joined by an un-named "young-un." A few days later, I returned with my camera to photograph the three of them. They were gone! All that was left was a burned spot on the lawn. I heard that a local leaving a bar flagged down a policeman and asked him what would happen if the bales caught fire. With a question like that and the physical state of the questioner, I'm sure the policeman made some notes --- just in case. It wasn't long before the fire department was called out to extinguish a fire on the courthouse square.
Ernie and Esther have not been seen since. It is a shame that some fool has to spoil a neat thing.
