Dormant Seeding
Hey, Its time to do some dormant seeding. What is he talking about this time, you ask? Well, if your lawn is thin, has some thin spots or a couple dreaded bare spots, now is the time to take of those spots. Fall is the best time to plant grass seed. Now or anytime during the winter is the second best time. It is easy to do. Most any day that the temperature is above freezing and there is no snow or ice on the ground, go out and scatter some grass seed on those problem areas. It works! It really does!! I have been doing it for years. My backyard grass is very thick and has few weeds. The thick grass doesn't allow many of the weed seeds to germinate. I still have "difficult" area back there and even it is showing improvement.
Here is how it works. Dormant seeding takes advantage of the freeze/thaw cycle. Grass seed actually falls into the cracks in the frozen ground and when the ground thaws during the day, it closes over the seed. Perfect seed bed. Mother Nature has been doing this with seeds for years.
I re-seeded my front yard a couple years ago. It is still pretty thin, for my tastes, so I have been dormant seeding heavily since the snow and ice has melted. I expect I will see improvement come May or June.
