Just Hackin My Life Away . . .

Ever since a week ago last Tuesday, I have not been feeling all that great.  Tuesday was the first of 2 days of 90+ degree humid weather.  Even hotter sittin on the mower.  I think I got broiled beyond well done.  Started with a sorish throat, then I started coughin . . . more and more . . . . harder and harder.  Last couple days I have been lookin for my voice.  The hackin seems to be gentler and less often today . . . maybe it is breakin up.  I'm startin to get tired of feelin like this.  I may be callin a dr.  for an appt. in a few days.  I been mowin all day, comin home and doin practically nothin cause I'm so tired.  Can't remember the last time I had a coughin cold . . . Been a couple yrs. since I've even had a head cold.  No need to send get well cards . . . I'm sure it will pass.  If it doesn't, cards aren't gonna help anyway.

Been a goofy week.  Last Monday, I started mowin where I usually mow on Mondays.  First time this season.  I even mowed the amount of grass I usually mow on Mondays.  I'm thinkin I'm gonna be done in 26-28 hrs. and I'll have Friday to go garage salin.  A couple local towns were havin community garage sales.  I like those . . . lots of sales in one area.

Coreoposis field

I even stopped to take this pic last Monday.  We planted a couple natural areas to wild flowers.  The coreopsis are in full bloom  right now.  Not a great pic, I took it just after lunch when the sun was too bright, but I hope ya get the idea.

Tuesday AM I take the mower out and notice it is smokin really bad.  Turns out the head gasket gave out.  Still waitin on the condition of the head.  Not good news for a golf course with barely enough money to operate.   Everybody is hoping it is just the gasket.  A new head is very expensive.

My dream of a normal work week went out the exhaust with the the steamy anti-freeze.  I knew I was destined for a week of drivin the little Toro.  It cuts a 5' swath.  The big mower cuts an 11' swath.  We re-commisioned the old '5111' to help with the rough.  The 5111 is an old rough mower.  It only has one deck that works.  The seat on it is almost non-existent.  I been gettin there very early to get the little Toro.  The little Toro is hard enough on my back.  Very much time on the 5111 would probably finish me off for good.  We were makin good time with the 2 mowers till Thursday PM.  A 20 minute, .60" down pour flooded every thing.  With a 'train' of yellow spots on radar headin our way, we gave up for the day.

Friday AM, I figgered I'd be mowin late and some Saturday AM to keep the grass honest.  We have an outing Monday, so we were tryin to get everything in order for that.  The gully washers and that wind on Wed. created some extra work.  Anyway, me and the 5111 started mowin first thing.  I was pretty sure I'd be mowin over the weekend.  About mid-morning the boss found out that there was a wedding reception this pm and an outdoor band and botchey ball tournament this evening.  That meant mowing extra around the clubhouse, which I don't think were in the plans.  There is more work to maintaining a golf course than meets the eye. Sooooo. . .  the boss broke out the old John Deere rough mower.  It has had problems from day one, especially the overheating problem.  It spews water out the exhaust, but several mechanics can find nothing wrong with the head gasket, etc.  We can run it 30-45 minutes before it overheats and have to add water to the radiator.  So, Lynn, our mechanic mowed with it.  He found and filled every jug he could find with water and took them with him on the mower.  Without the old John Deere, I think I would have been mowin today. We only had to work a half hour extra everything done.

Monday will be a short day due to the outing.  With rain mentioned everyday this week, we may be doing last week all over again.
