I haven't had anything in my rain gauge for two straight days . . . First time since April 12, 13 & 14 when I obviously went three days. Being a part of COCORAHS.org, I keep track of these things. I had 7.69" of rain for May which is a lot less than a lot of nearby places. Yesterday was a hot, humid and windy day. With all the humidity, I'm not sure how much the ground dried out. Today was a lot less humid, a bit cooler, but waaay more windy. It has been a good drying day. Weather report is suggesting a lot less wind, but plenty of sun tomorrow, so the drying of the ground should continue.
Yesterday started out semi- normal. I found out I was supposed to come in mow 2-3 hrs. Monday AM. I thought the boss was gonna call. Oh, well . . . he said that too. The grass is still there, but definitely longer.
Around mid morning a speeding car somehow didn't see the sign saying the road is closed to through traffic and smacked it good. The elderly couple stayed on the road. They got out checked out their car and put the sign back together. It is made of PVC and fits together kinda like legos. Then they got back in their car and continued down the road that is closed to through traffic. Elderly people are like that sometimes. I know I am . . .
I had to mow around a box turtle yesterday. . . Don't know why he was where he was. There wasn't any water, even puddles, anywhere close to where we were. He wasn't a bit scared of the mower. He watched me every time I mowed by him. Today I barely missed another turtle. Didn't see him till my deck was beside him. Could get any closer without hitting him. Maybe it was the same turtle . . . He was about the same size. I shredded a bunker rake too. Didn't see it in the long grass till I heard it bein shredded. Nothing left but wood splinters. Never got one that good before . . .
We got a lot mowed yesterday. I was on the big Toro and we had the little Toro going all day. Late morning I saw the 5111, an old rough mower go out. It only has one working deck . . . cuts 4-5' swath. The boss closed the back 9 on Sunday and Monday because it was so wet and the grass was so long. The 3.5" last week and the fact we lost 2.5 mowin days, makes a difference. Got stuck 3 times yesterday. The big Toro is not equipped with 4-wheel drive. All three times I was spinning on a layer of mud. Didn't even create a rut of any significance.
Got stuck once today. It was my own stupid fault. I was in my own little rough mowing world and mowed a swath next to a wet spot that I mowed last week before all that rain. It was like quicksand. I actually felt the mower drop. I doubt that 4-wheel drive would have saved me. I'm makin that spot a 'natural' or 'wild' area till someone tells me to mow it or someone else does it. That spot always gets soft when we get a lot of rain. They kept me on the front 9 today to make it look good. I will probably be on the back 9 tomorrow. It was women's league day and they played their 18 holes on the front 9. There are large areas on the back 9 where the grass is 10-12 inches tall. If we were in the city, the bldg. dept. would be posting notices to mow it or else. I say let them try to mow it.
This grass mowin is getting to be work. I gotta stay away from golfers, dodge golf balls, stay out of wet spots, avoid hidden bunker rakes, mow around turtles and keep an eye out for speeding cars on the course. At least the bigger snappers jump out of the way at the last second . . . and I'm always amazed at how high and far those black snakes can jump to get out of the way . . . Drivin a mower around a golf course, cuttin grass down to size isn't as easy as you may think . . .
