Happens almost every year about this time . . . My annual standoff with a Killdeer. One year I had two.
I'm mowin along, mindin my own business, like I always do and the next thing I know I sittin on my mower starin at a Killdeer that is starin back at me.
Doesn't take long till she goes into her 'bring it on, punk' pose. And, as usual, I back down and mow around her eggs. This lady had 4. Killdeer don't build nests. They seem to pick a place and lay their eggs. They blend in with the ground and vegetation very well. When ya finally spot them and take your eyes off of them, it isn't easy spottin them again.
