It has been said that golf is a very simple, yet very difficult game. I have no idea how true that statement may or may not be. Where I work we have four year round full time guys and right now 3 seasonal guys working on the course to make it easier for those playing to hit the ball in the hole in the ground.
The area around the hole is mowed to 1/8" just about every day. It is usually rolled at least once a week. It is watered several time daily if Mom Nature doesn't do it. It gets sprayed when needed to prevent diseases, insects and weeds. I've mowed that area several times during my 5 summers of being a seasonal guy and the area around the holes is really smooth!! Don't know what else could be done to make it easier.
The starting point place is clear of tall grass and is pretty smooth. No stones, clumps of grass, etc. to interfere with hitting the ball. We mow it pretty short, but not as short as the area around the holes. It usually gets mowed 3 times each week. It gets sprayed for diseases, insects and weeds too. It gets its share of water too.
The area between the starting place and the ending place clear of long grass, stones, weeds, trees, bushes, etc. It gets mowed about 3 times each week. I think it gets cut to about 3/8". It is bumpier than the area around the holes, but it is still pretty smooth. It gets plenty of water and is sprayed for weeds, insects and disease.
For the past 5 summers, they make me take care of the most of the area between the starting place, ending place and the place in between the starting and ending place. It doesn't get any extra water if Mom Nature doesn't give it enough. No one sprays it for weeds, disease or insects. There are trees and bushes all over the place. The grass is long. I have to cut it back to 3" every week.
It seems to me that we are bending over backwards to make it easy for those who like to hit little white balls toward and into holes that are we dig for them. Don't see what is so difficult about golf. Nothing in the way of hitting the ball to the hole in the ground and the ground is pretty smooth so it should roll without too much trouble. So I don't know why so many complain about it. Am I missing something ???
