Saturday, December 11, 2010 . . .

Woke up to frozen fog this mornin.  This area seems to have fog no matter what the season.

I picked up my snow blower from the shop first thing this mornin.  I thought I stripped the pinion gear in the starter . . . again . . . it is made of plastic.  Well it seems that the plastic starter mount cracked sometime last winter and when I attempted to start it a couple weeks ago, it broke completely and that damaged the pinion gear.  No matter what they so called experts say, plastic and cold weather don't get along real well.  The repair man told me that a mount wasn't available . . . hafta get a whole new starter moter, which runs about $200.  They did some callin around and some horse tradin and came up with a used starter mount and a pinion gear.  Saved me a chunk of money.

After gettin the snow blower home, I headed off to Ayersville for an indoor auction.  There was a closer outdoor auction, but . . . .  Absolutely nothing interesting to bid on.  Oh, well, sometimes ya win some and sometimes ya don't.  On the way to Ayersville I saw a barn fire.  I'm thinkin maybe it was a training burn, because another building was burning and it wasn't very close to the barn.  One doesn't see active barn fires very often.

Since the day was young and the temperature was in the mid forties, I decided to hike Goll Woods.  Not a bad day for a hike and a lot more interesting than walkin around town.  On the way back the radio people were talkin about the blizzard in Minnesota.  They aren't plowin roads cause it is too dangerous.  Also said the Home Depots in Minneapolis area have sold $34,000 worth of snow blowers the last couple days.  That's a lot of snow blowers.  I'm sure a lot of extras were shipped to the stores the last few days.  Kinda hard for me to believe that that many people didn't have snow blowers . . . don't they realize where they are livin????

Predicted snow totals for my yard seem to be all over.  I've heard 1-3 and up to 10".  I think the totals are goin to depend on when the rain turns to snow tonight.  I seem to be on the southern edge of the storm.  They say I'm gonna be gettin winds up to 30 mpg tomorrow and the temperature is gonna be a long way south of 32 degrees this week.  Whiteout conditions have been mentioned.

A few days ago, Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel, was talkin about computer models of the impending storm.  One model went way south of here, another went through the middle of Ohio and the third went just north of here.  He called this one the European Model.  He was pretty sure the storm wouldn't follow that track . . . something about it almost always bein wrong when some other stuff was present.  I think he pretty well blew it cause the storm center seems to be followin the European Model's track as I remember it.  I haven't seen Jim on tv since . . . Wonder if they sent him to Minnesota????
