A Big Splash & Big Wind In Bryan . . .

One of those so called pop up storms found Bryan last night.  1.98 inches of rain fell in about an hour . . . . and during all the splashin, there was a lot of wind.  I was watchin some treetops across the street.  The tops were bent over for about 10 minutes at one point . . . now swaying, but bent over for about 10 minutes.  I'm thinkin there were some gusts and sustained winds well over 50 mph.  And during all this, the electric went out just after 8 PM.  Still haven't re-set all those clocks that blink till you do. Had no tv or internet to track the storm, so that meant that all I had to keep track of the storm's progress was my battery operated weather radio and my eyes.

At one point the wind settled down to a reasonable speed and the rain all but stopped.  I could see that I had over an inch in the rain gauge.  I decided to do something I don't normally do.  I got into my truck to look for damage and see how much of Bryan was without electricity.  Wasn't more than a half mile from my house when it started up again.  The wind was as strong, but it rained much, much harder.  Could barely see where the street was.  When I hit a flooded section of the street, that I didn't see, I thought to myself that this isn't the smartest thing I've done all day . . . . and probably Monday too.
A few minutes later, by the time I got myself home, the rain had slowed quite a bit.  When it slowed to a drizzle, I found 1.98" in my gauge.  Not bad for an hour of rain . . .  Power came back just before 10 PM

I figgered the golf course would be a messy mass of downed limbs and sticks and be flooded this AM.  Only had .4" in their rain gauge.  Not near as many sticks and limbs down as I thought..  Obviously they missed the heart of the storm.  They had me pick up sticks for a couple hours.  First manual labor I've done around there this year.  Then I mowed till the golfers caught up with me.  It was within a half hour of quittin time anyway.  The Toledo District Golfer's Assoc. had a tournament here today.  I think the east side of the course got a lot more rain that where the rain gauge is located.

It was a very windy, sometimes over 30 mph, day.  I'm sure the wind did a lot of dryin.  I'm thoroughly wind burned.

The local news paper said some poles blew down and a good sized tree fell on a house near the broken poles. I really don't like trees close to my house.  Seein that tree on that house, didn't change my mind any.

Here is a 'propped up' pole broken at ground level.

half pole

This one broke about half way up.  I'll bet there were some 'fireworks' when the wires touched the wires below!!  Bryan has their own electric company and buys a large portion of their electricity.  I think the broken poles support lines that bring in a large portion of our electrcity from various sources.

downed pole

This pole is completely on the ground.  I was able to get it with my telescopic lens.  Looks like there are a couple more broken poles down the road.  The road is closed.  There is a broken pole that is propped up down around the corner from me.  Probably a few more here and there.  One of the guys at work said he saw a flag pole broken off at one of the banks in town.

There is a lot of this in the area.  Re-routing electricity, I guess.   It wasn't a normal Tuesday evening.
