A couple weeks ago I had a couple annoying days -- seemed like every little and big thing thoroughly annoyed me. Today went beyond annoying. It has been a thoroughly annoyingly disgusting day!
Day started out ok. Foggy with a heavy dew. I like heavy dews. Dew makes it very easy to see where I have mowed. I just try to get as much mowed as I can before the dew dries up. Just before 8 AM the batteries in my ear muffs die. I knew they were about ready to do that and I had charged ones in the truck. I decided to wait till lunch to get them. That was annoying, but not really disgusting.
Around 10:30 I was making my last pass on the slope behind the clubhouse. I was about 2/3 the way down when I lose traction. Of course it was a place where there is virtually no flat area before the creek. I attempted to get my mower turned but there wasn't enough room. I slid into the creek at about a 45 degree angle. At least it wasn't head on -- pretty sure it doesn't have an airbag. The mower was setting close to a 45 degree angle partly in the water and partly on the steep bank. I always think about what I hope I do if this situation arises. I kept my cool and rode it to the edge and jumped for the opposite bank as the mower went over the edge. Almost made it. Got kinda wet. Then I noticed my camera floating on the water, so I waded back in to get it. It was in its camera bag and I had the camera bag in what I use to keep my PB & J sandwiches in when I eat on the mower. Camera didn't get wet. Thought about taking a pic, but I didn't cause I was started to get real disgusted with myself. Only thing I can think of is that I let up a bit too much on the pedal and the wheels stopped turning and they locked up and I slid like a sled down the hill. That is how I usually lose traction on the slopes. Had to go over to the horse farm next door to borrow a tractor powerful enough to pull the mower out. Didn't hurt the mower. Took it back to the shop hosed off the mud and algae, greased it up, ate lunch and mowed the rest of the day.
Wasn't long before my wet underwear started to chafe. That can be and was very disgusting too. Thought about hanging them out to dry on one of the flags on the greens, but thought better of it. And so ended a very disgusting day at work.
I thought I was gonna make it through a complete season without getting the rough mower stuck. Well, there is always next year.
